The UCW Partnership was formed in 2003 and is a joint initiative between the Murray & Roberts subsidiary, Union Carriage & Wagon Co. (Pty) Ltd, and a consortium led by the J&J Group.

As a broad-based empowerment enterprise, The UCW Partnership provides innovative rail transport solutions to South Africa and key export markets. Since 1957, 13 000 new locomotives, suburban trains and coaches have been designed and manufactured at its 37-hectare facility situated at Nigel, South Africa. Refurbishing and upgrading of rolling stock is a significant element of the partnership's growth strategy.

The business is world renowned for the design and manufacture of electric locomotives, diesel electric/diesel hydraulic locomotives, intercity passenger coaches, electric multiple units, railcars and all-purpose freight wagons.

The  UCW Partnership is a dominant player in the Southern African railway industry. It is committed to delivering highest quality products and service excellence.

This commitment is reinforced by an expert engineering and design team satisfying the requirements of the most exacting customers. The company offers a full spectrum of services, including conceptual studies, estimating, procurement, project management, cost control, production management, commissioning and systems integration of all rolling stock components. Designs are constantly reviewed and updated in order to meet the latest technological demands.

The Nigel facility is purpose designed and built for the manufacture, refurbishment and overhauling of all types of rolling stock. Extensive facilities exist for static and dynamic testing, ensuring maximum reliability of rolling stock, irrespective of rail gauge, climatic conditions and operating requirements.
